prairie / glacial erratic

prairie
for string quartet

glacial erratic
for string quartet and drones

Written for Quatuor Bozzini

With this project, I am exploring extended time and resonant vessels with new works for chamber ensembles.  The second work in this project collection is prairie / glacial erratic for Quatuor Bozzini.

The Canadian Prairies stretch across regions of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, defined by open land, immense skies, and endless horizons. In these open spaces, time seems to stretch outward, and even the smallest movement carries significance. prairie reflects on this sense of stillness, quiet transformation, vast scale and spaciousness in this landscape.

A glacial erratic is a rock deposited by a glacier that differs from from the type of rock native to the area in which it lies. They are carried by glacial ice, often over long distances. Erratics take their name from the Latin word errare – “to wander”.

prairie is approximately 20 minutes, and glacial erratic is approximately 15 minutes. *Please note that this project contains two sister pieces, that may be played separately, or together.
