Flora MacDonald Denison in Bon Echo Park (2019)
for octet (open instrumentation), plus 50 kazoos (for audience and ensemble)
Commissioned by Continuum Contemporary Music, with the generous support of Stanley Witkin
Flora MacDonald Denison was a Canadian political activist and journalist, known for her leadership role in the Canadian suffragist movement, and her stewardship of Bon Echo Provincial Park in Ontario. Amongst her many achievements, she encouraged women to imagine how they might create a different society, and promoted the creation of child care centers for poor working families. In honour of Continuum’s 35th birthday, this work was written to imagine Flora spending time in her beloved Bon Echo Provincial Park.
