Blue Moss Ensemble

Blue Moss Ensemble

Mosses are a botanical division (phylum) of small, soft plants that are typically 1–10 cm (0.4–4 in) tall, though some species are much larger, like Dawsonia, the tallest moss in the world which can grow to 50 cm in height. They commonly grow close together in clumps or mats in damp or shady locations.

Blue Moss Ensemble is a composer-performer cooperative and community-building project bridging new-music creators from the communities of Victoria and Toronto. We seek to create a trans-national dialogue through a series of concerts comprised almost exclusively of premieres that respond to the contemporary climate of these two cities. Furthermore, we explore unusual instrument combinations and collisions, seeking to include an element of the strange or peculiar in every concert, whether composing new music for period instruments, or including kazoo alongside a piano trio.  Blue Moss Ensemble revolves around projects curated by Canadian composers Emilie LeBel, Anna Höstman and Mitch Renaud.
